Child "Protective" Services

An excellent article on the front page today about Child Protective Services by SAEN staff writer Joseph S. Stroud. After reading it I could not help but feel like I was taking crazy pills. Having worked in government in the past I can honestly say that much of what is wrong with it boils down to a lack of common sense; plain and simple. That is the feeling you get after reading today's article. The report continues on page 4A, and at the bottom of the page there is a timeline for a case highlighted by the report. It is nothing short of appalling. The story follows the case of Anna Lopez and Toby Martinez:
But Lopez and Martinez have been stumbling for more than 10 years, ever since her oldest child was born and she dropped out of the ninth grade.

They gave up rights to Lopez's four oldest children in 2001 because they wouldn't stop abusing them, wouldn't stop using drugs and alcohol, and didn't attend required parenting classes and counseling sessions.

And then in September of 2002 the two had another child. It is over two years later and the state still has not removed that child from Ms. Lopez's care. If this doesn't motivate you to contact your representative in the Texas Legislature, I don't know what will. Mr. Stroud has the Commando's thanks for bringing this issue up.
