Diversity Lacking In Our Colleges

An article in today’s Washington Post reports that liberals are an even larger majority on our college campuses than previously thought:
By their own description, 72 percent of those teaching at American universities and colleges are liberal and 15 percent are conservative, says the study being published this week. The imbalance is almost as striking in partisan terms, with 50 percent of the faculty members surveyed identifying themselves as Democrats and 11 percent as Republicans.

The disparity is even more pronounced at the most elite schools, where, according to the study, 87 percent of faculty are liberal and 13 percent are conservative.

Not surprisingly, considering the percentages above, most professors aren’t too concerned with religion:
Religious services take a back seat for many faculty members, with 51 percent saying they rarely or never attend church or synagogue and 31 percent calling themselves regular churchgoers. On the gender front, 72 percent of the full-time faculty are male and 28 percent female.

Clearly, college professors are far out of the American mainstream:
In contrast with the finding that nearly three-quarters of college faculty are liberal, a Harris Poll of the general public last year found that 33 percent describe themselves as conservative and 18 percent as liberal.

The study also gave results about specific hot-button issues, and again the results were skewed way to the left:
The liberal label that a majority of the faculty members attached to themselves is reflected on a variety of issues. The professors and instructors surveyed are, strongly or somewhat, in favor of abortion rights (84 percent); believe homosexuality is acceptable (67 percent); and want more environmental protection "even if it raises prices or costs jobs" (88 percent). What's more, the study found, 65 percent want the government to ensure full employment, a stance to the left of the Democratic Party.

Amazing; the people teaching our children want the government to ensure full employment. There is a term for that: socialism.
Comments:
I think one reason why so few academics identify with the conservative position these days is because the very meaning of conservatism has been distorted to include extreme anti-science and anti-intellectual views held by the radicals and fundamentalists who have taken control of the Republican Party.
Today’s “conservatives” are expected to disregard scientific data on matters such as global warming, evolution, reproductive health and contraception, sexual orientation and gender, and on and on. Instead they must toe the party line as dictated by the religious right ayatollahs in Washington.
I’ll bet more academics vote Republican, they are just embarrassed to say so.

Then again, maybe its just a simple matter of the smarter someone is the more liberal they are. ;)

And what are we supposed to do about it anyway? Set up affirmative action programs and quota systems for “conservatives”. I’ll claim to be a “conservative” if someone will give me a high-paying university faculty position. Think I can pull it off?

And what are we supposed to do about it anyway?

I find this statement to be a little hypocritical on your part Mike after the hissy fit you threw because of conservative talk radio in San Antonio.

Today’s “conservatives” are expected to disregard scientific data on matters such as global warming, evolution, reproductive health and contraception, sexual orientation and gender, and on and on.

On the contrary Mike, liberals are the ones who check their brains at the door. In fact the only time I see a liberal use their brain is when they are running for office and trying to hide the fact that they are liberal. Clinton did it when he ran and Kerry tried to do it when he ran, and now Hillary is following in their footsteps. You believe the "scientific data" on global warming, but there is just as much research that disproves global warming. So conservative don't believe it because we don't just choose to believe the facts that conveniently prove our beliefs. As far as gender, it is liberals who get so mad when somebody has the audacity to say that men and women are different so who is using their brain on this one? You consider evolution a fact of science even though it is called the "theory" of evolution. A theory, in case you don't know, is not a fact. Archeological evidence abounds to prove much of what the Bible says and yet you dismiss it out of hand in support of a theory you "feel" is correct.

Then again, maybe it’s just a simple matter of the smarter someone is the more liberal they are.

Again, liberals base their arguments on what they "feel," not on what makes sense logically. Liberals feel that it is good for gay people to marry in spite of the consequences to society, and you feel that global warming is a fact even if no definitive science exists, and you feel that women and men are the same so you get upset if somebody states the obvious, they are not.

Instead they must toe the party line as dictated by the religious right ayatollahs in Washington.

Finally, because you can't base your arguments in facts because they are what you feel, you resort to insults. I am a conservative Christian, and therefore qualify as an "ayatollah."

This is a good post, and you bring up some interesting points. According to this data, 49 percent of faculty attend church regularly or semi-regularly (if 51 percent never or seldom attend church)..This, to me, sounds a bit higher than the national averages. Pretty impressive actually. Typically, the more education a person receives, the more "liberal" they become, or so says the stereotype (just ask Karl Rove). I have to side with Mike on this one. If liberalism is a problem in academic, as you claim that it is, what do you propose be done about that?

after the hissy fit you threw because of conservative talk radioHeh. My little hissy fit got results though, didn't it. ;)

there is just as much research that disproves global warmingIf that is so, then where is all this research and why isn't it showing up in the peer-reviewed scientific journals?
I've noted before that the overwhelming consensus of the scientific community for a number of years has sided in favor of global warming.

it is liberals who get so mad when somebody has the audacity to say that men and women are differentI don't disagree that there are differences between the genders. But what Lawrence Summer implied was that women are innately bad at math and science and that is why there are so few in those fields. Since my wife is a Ph.D. biochemist and a prof at UTSA, I found his comments to be highly insulting and grossly ignorant.

You consider evolution a fact of science even though it is called the "theory" Most of our scientific knowledge is based on theory and until a better theory comes along we go with what we got. I'm not sure what archeological evidence you are referring to, but I've never been one to see any conflict between God and science.

it is good for gay people to marry in spite of the consequences to societyThere are no "consequences to society," at least not any bad ones. What is wrong with promoting monagamous relationships among gays. Do you prefer promiscuity that only spreads diseases?

liberals base their arguments on what they "feel," not on what makes sense logically.I'm sure there are many that do, but I always try to base my arguments in logic (though I don't always succeed.)

I am a conservative Christian, and therefore qualify as an "ayatollah."Well, I'm a liberal Christian and I don't think either one of us qualifies as an "ayatollah."

The issue on global warming is not the fact of it, but the supposed cause of it, and the recommended solution. Kyoto worshippers are 100% certain it's because of evil Capitalism and the only way to stop it is to shut down our economy - for many of them, they look for global warming to accomplish what Communism failed to do.

There is much evidence that the warming is simply an astronomical cycle, and there is nothing at all we can do about it. Better to not send the world into a depression if it isn't even going to keep warming from occurring. For that matter, even if industrialization is a large contributor, there are studies showing that Kyoto constraints (remember, China and India are exempt) would have a negligible effect, while severely damaging the world economy.

The whole report is a lie! Nobody really believes that 72% of college faculty are liberal. The truth is that number is more!

May I share some of my experiences? I can only speak for myself and for the university I attend (UTSA) but when I dialogue with other students at UTSA or students that attend other universities (both private and public) I discover that my experience isn’t all that unique.

3 hours a week I must sit in a Texas History class taught by a Hispanic-female professor that has absolutely not one good thing to say about Texas History. Somehow there is not one single achievement done by a white male that deserves mention in the class. NOT ONE. Also, we were forced to write a paper that explains why the American-Mexican War was one of American imperialism. But this paper typifies the way liberals operate in the university. See, the paper was really a “compare and contrast” between two articles. The articles, one written by a Hispanic who is a professor of history in Mexico, and another written by some no name historian that teaches at a community college somewhere in the U.S. Liberals know they cannot simply come out and say what they want so they use means that are less forthright.

I have a Political Science professor that gave “extra credit” if you wrote essays about articles in the NEW YORK TIMES. Enough said.

I had another Political Science professor that in discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict goes only as far back as “Israel forced Palestine out” and “Israel is hording land that wasn’t give to them” of course no mention is made about how 5 Arabic countries attacked Israel at once. At then end of the Israel-Palestine lecture she bragged that many Middle-Easterners come to here and thank her for being “balanced.” Funny, she never mentions any Jews that have said the same thing.

In both of my freshman writing classes classmates wrote essays covering a broad area of topics. No. I lied. They didn’t. Almost every essay was written to argue for the legalization of marijuana or why God shouldn’t be in the pledge or why prostitution should be legal or why we should have “gun control” or legalization of marijuana or why we should allow same-sex marriage or why the nuclear family is bad or why marijuana should be legalized. Of course these are my 18 year old classmates not my professors. Gosh, I write a paper that argues for why Jonathan Edwards should be kept in American Literature and my teacher then castrates my paper. (B become C if you were wondering)

I could go on if you wanted me too.
