"Air America" wants President Bush dead?

Recently, Commando pointed out the pathetic ratings of liberal talk radio show "Air America". Perhaps the ratings are due to the hate speech spewed by the show's hosts.
The skit this week by Air America host Randi Rhodes featuring simulated gunshots fired at President Bush is at least the second time Rhodes has used her program to discuss the idea of killing the president.

On her May 10, 2004, Air America program, Rhodes compared Bush to Fredo Corleone, the weak son in the Godfather movies, who was, on his brother Michael's orders, taken on a fishing trip during which he was murdered with a gunshot to the head. "They are the Corleones," Rhodes said of the Bush family. "The Fredo of the family is the president of the United States, so why doesn't his father take him, or his brother, one of them, take him out for a little, uh, fishing? You know, let him say some Hail Marys, he loves God so much. Yeah, take him out, you know, 'Hail Mary, full of grace, God is with thee' -- POW!" Rhodes paused briefly before adding, "Works for me."
Can you imagine the outrage if Rush Limbaugh had said something like that about Slick Willy? I'm thankful no stations in San Antonio air this tripe.
Comments:
I've never heard the Randi Rhodes show, but I agree that segments such as this should be strongly condemned.
But it is unfair to smear all of liberal radio because of this isolated example.
Furthermore, it seems almost unnecessary to point out that right-wing yakkers like Rush Limbaugh, G. Gordon Liddy, Ann Coulter and Michael Savage have had their fair share of offensive and outrageous commentaries spewed across the airwaves for years with little resulting detriment to their ratings.

Similarly, it is unfair to claim, as you apparently are, that I "smeared all of liberal radio" in this post. I did not.

Did they joke about assassinating the president? I must have missed the outrage. But, so far as ratings, I didn't say Air America WOULD experience ratings decline because of this (nothin' from nothin'...), I merely implied I would be pleased if they did. More likely that the moveon type of partisan zealots will start listening to the show, increasing their ratings.

Or perhaps you are saying that the right-wing audiences eat that sort of stuff up, and continue to patronize those shows? Even if that is true, the liberals are similarly saying "right on, daddy-o" to Air America in response to this stunt...meaning you have lost all of the moral high ground always claimed when demonizing talk radio as some sort of racist, homophobic, intolerant bile.

My apologies. But you do imply that all of Air America's on air hosts are guilty of this slander when it applies to just one person's talk show.

No more or less than the "moveon type of partisan zealots" do.

I for one am saying "wrong-o, mommy-o" on this one.

you have lost all of the moral high ground always claimed when demonizing talk radio as some sort of racist, homophobic, intolerant bile.

I only demonize talk radio when it does spew "racist, homophobic, intolerant bile" and not as a general rule.

Mike,

Sometimes our guys do something stupid, sometimes yours do. Fun when it's the other side, no?

This is a bit beyond that. As much as I hated Clinton occupying the Whitehouse, I stated to amazed friends that I would step in front of a bullet to protect the president (I *am* a USAF officer, even if retired). Jokes about shooting the president are not just in bad taste, they are f-ing illegal. This time, your side took a hard hit.

Don't worry -- it's only a matter of time untill some Republican does something stupid and this will all be in the past. I just hope Rhodes is thrown off the radio by Air America first.

Actually, Mike, it goes all the way into the basic production of Air America:

Rhodes maintains the skit was created by producers at Air America without her knowledge

You know, sometimes comedians go overboard with a joke, but in this case this is the second time this has happened and that is inexcusable. I agree with Raven on this; I didn't much care for Clinton's administration either, but I never wished him and harm and prayed for his safety and health just as I do for President Bush. Air America is giving liberals a bad name.
