The Pope & Iraq

Much has been said in the media about how Pope John Paul II opposed the war in Iraq, but is that true? I don't recall the Pope ever publicly condemning the war. Here is what the editors of National Review had to say:
The Pope's opposition to the Iraq war has also been exaggerated. He said that war represented a failure of statesmen and urged peace. But he did not condemn the war, declare it unjust, or urge Catholic soldiers not to participate in it.

If any of my liberal friends can find an actual quote by the Pope, not from a cardinal, where he specifically condemns the war I would be indebted to you if you would pass it along to me.
